Privacy at a Glance
What we collect: Your email, profile information (name, age, relationship details), chat messages, images you share, and basic usage data
Why we collect it: To provide personalized AI chat services, analyze screenshots, and manage your account
Who processes it: Your messages, images, and profile context are sent to OpenAI for AI responses. Voice dictation is processed on-device by Apple/Google speech services. Crash reports go to Sentry for bug fixes.
What we don't do: Sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps
Your control: You must consent before data is shared with AI services. Delete your account and data anytime.
Lainie ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use the Lainie mobile application (the "App").
By using Lainie, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Profile Information Details: During onboarding, we ask you to provide the following to help Lainie give you personalized relationship advice:
- Display Name — how Lainie addresses you
- Age — required for COPPA compliance and context
- Location (optional) — to understand cultural context
- Sexuality (optional) — to personalize advice
- Relationship Status (optional) — to understand your situation
- Partner Name (optional) — for more natural conversation
- Additional Context (optional) — any other information you choose to share
All optional fields can be skipped. This information is stored in our database and may be included as context when generating AI responses to provide more relevant advice.
1.2 Authentication via Third Parties
When you sign in using third-party services, we receive:
- Google Sign-In: Email address, name, profile picture (optional)
- Apple Sign In: Email address (or private relay email), name (optional)
Note: We only receive the minimum information necessary to create and authenticate your account. Your Google or Apple passwords are never shared with us.
1.3 Automatically Collected Information
- Device Information: Device model, operating system version, unique device identifiers (for push notifications)
- Usage Data: Message count, features accessed, app open/close times
- Push Notification Token: To send you notifications (if enabled)
- Subscription Status: Whether you have an active premium subscription
1.4 Device Permissions
Lainie requests the following device permissions only when you use specific features:
- Photo Library Access: Used only when you choose to share screenshots for analysis. Images are sent to OpenAI for processing and are not permanently stored on our servers.
- Microphone Access: Used only for voice-to-text dictation. Audio is processed entirely on your device by Apple's Speech Recognition (iOS) or Google's Speech Services (Android). No audio recordings are sent to Lainie's servers.
- Speech Recognition: Used alongside microphone access for voice dictation. Processed by your device's built-in speech services.
1.5 Information We Do NOT Collect
We want to be clear about what we don't collect:
- ❌ Precise GPS or device location data (we may ask for your general location during onboarding, but this is optional and typed by you)
- ❌ Contact list
- ❌ Camera access (we access your photo library, not the camera)
- ❌ Voice recordings or audio files (voice dictation is processed on-device and only the transcribed text is used)
- ❌ Browsing history from other apps
- ❌ Third-party tracking pixels or cookies
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information for the following purposes:
2.1 Core Service Delivery
- Process and respond to your chat messages using AI
- Store your conversation history so you can access it across devices
- Authenticate your account and keep it secure
- Manage your subscription (free vs. premium)
2.2 Product Improvement
- Analyze usage patterns to improve app performance
- Fix bugs and technical issues
- Understand which features are most valuable to users
2.3 Communication
- Send push notifications (if you enable them) with conversation reminders
- Respond to your support requests
- Notify you of important service updates
2.4 Freemium Model Enforcement
- Track your message count to enforce the 50 free message limit
- Determine when to display upgrade prompts
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share your data only in the following limited circumstances:

All service providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the purposes we specify.
3.2 AI Message Processing
Important: When you send a message in Lainie, the following data is sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) to generate a personalized response:
- Your message content — the text you type (or dictate) in the chat
- Images & screenshots — when you share images for analysis, they are sent to OpenAI for processing. Images are not permanently stored on our servers.
- Your profile context — information you provided during onboarding (such as your name, age, relationship status, and any additional context) to help the AI give relevant advice
- Conversation history — prior messages in your current conversation for continuity
Our AI provider (OpenAI):
- Processes your data solely to generate a response to your message
- Does not use your conversations to train their AI models (per our contractual agreement)
- Does not retain your messages longer than necessary to provide the service
- Is subject to their own privacy policy: openai.com/privacy
Consent: Before your first chat message, the app will ask for your explicit consent to share data with our AI provider. You cannot use the chat feature without providing this consent.
3.3 Error Tracking & Crash Reporting (Sentry)
We use Sentry to monitor app stability and fix bugs. Sentry may collect:
- IP address — to identify the geographic region of errors
- Device information — device model, OS version, app version
- Error context — stack traces and application state at the time of a crash
- Session replays — on errors, a replay of app interactions may be captured to help diagnose the issue (sampled at 10% of sessions normally, 100% when an error occurs)
Sentry does not have access to your chat messages or profile information. Data sent to Sentry is used exclusively for debugging and improving app reliability. Sentry's privacy policy is available at sentry.io/privacy.
3.4 Voice Dictation (On-Device Processing)
When you use voice dictation, your speech is processed by your device's built-in speech recognition service:
- iOS: Apple's Speech Recognition framework (SFSpeechRecognizer)
- Android: Google's Speech Services (SpeechRecognizer)
Key points:
- Audio is processed on your device or by Apple/Google's speech servers — not by Lainie's servers
- No audio recordings are stored or transmitted to Lainie
- Only the resulting transcribed text is used, and it appears in the chat input for you to review and edit before sending

3.5 Legal Obligations
We may disclose your information if required to:
- Comply with valid legal processes (subpoena, court order)
- Enforce our Terms of Service
- Protect the rights, property, or safety of Lainie, our users, or the public
- Prevent fraud or security threats
3.6 Business Transfers
If Lainie is acquired or merges with another company, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your data is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
4. Data Storage & Security
4.1 Where Your Data is Stored
- Cloud Database: Supabase (hosted on AWS, secure servers)
- Local Device: Chat preferences, message drafts, subscription status (encrypted via iOS SecureStore)
4.2 Security Measures
We implement industry-standard security measures:
- 🔒 Encryption in Transit: All data transmitted between your device and our servers uses HTTPS/TLS encryption
- 🔒 Encryption at Rest: Your data is encrypted when stored in our database
- 🔒 Password Security: Passwords are hashed using bcrypt (never stored in plain text)
- 🔒 Access Controls: Strict access controls limit who can access user data
- 🔒 Regular Security Audits: We review our security practices regularly
Note: While we use best practices to protect your data, no internet transmission or storage system is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
5. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services:
- Account Data: Retained until you delete your account
- Profile Information: Retained until you delete your account
- Chat Messages: Retained until you delete your account or individual conversations
- Subscription Data: Retained for tax and legal compliance (typically 7 years after subscription ends)
- Usage Analytics: Aggregated usage data may be retained indefinitely (anonymized)
- AI Provider (OpenAI): Messages are not retained by OpenAI beyond what is needed to generate a response, per our contractual agreement
- Crash Reports (Sentry): Error data is retained by Sentry for 90 days by default
Account Deletion: When you delete your account, we permanently delete:
- Your email and profile information (including all onboarding data) within 30 days
- All chat messages and conversation history within 30 days
- Personal preferences and settings immediately
6. Your Privacy Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal information:
6.1 Access & Portability
- View Your Data: You can view your account information and chat history in the app
- Export Your Data: Request a copy of your data in a portable format (email support@hilainie.com)
6.2 Correction & Deletion
- Update Information: Change your email or preferences in app settings
- Delete Messages: Delete individual conversations in the app
- Delete Account: Permanently delete your account and all data via app settings
6.3 Control Over Communications
- Push Notifications: Disable in app settings or iOS system settings
- Opt Out of Emails: Unsubscribe link in any email we send
6.4 California Residents (CCPA)
California users have additional rights:
- Right to Know: Request details about data collected in the past 12 months
- Right to Delete: Request deletion of your personal information
- Right to Opt-Out: We do not sell personal information, so no opt-out is necessary
- Non-Discrimination: You will receive equal service and pricing regardless of privacy choices
6.5 European Residents (GDPR)
EU/EEA users have rights under GDPR:
- Legal Basis for Processing: We process data based on consent, contract performance, and legitimate interests
- Data Portability: Receive your data in a machine-readable format
- Right to Object: Object to processing based on legitimate interests
- Right to Restrict: Request temporary restriction of data processing
- Withdraw Consent: Withdraw consent for optional data processing

7. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
Age Requirement: Lainie is intended for users 13 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Age Verification: During account setup, users are required to provide their age. If a user indicates they are under 13 years old:
- They will be blocked from using the app immediately
- Their account will be signed out automatically
- No personal information will be collected or stored
If we discover that a user under 13 has provided personal information, we will:
- Delete their account immediately
- Remove all associated data from our systems
- Notify the account email address of the deletion (if applicable)

8. International Data Transfers
Lainie is based in the United States. By using our App, you consent to your information being transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate.
These countries may have different data protection laws than your country of residence. We ensure appropriate safeguards through:
- Standard contractual clauses with service providers
- Compliance with EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield frameworks (where applicable)
- Regular review of service provider security practices
9. Cookies & Tracking Technologies
Mobile App: Our iOS app does not use cookies. We use:
- Local Storage: To save preferences and cache data on your device
- Session Tokens: To keep you logged in securely
Website (hilainie.com): Our website may use minimal cookies for:
- Essential website functionality
- Remembering your preferences
We do not use:

10. Third-Party Links

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. When we make changes:
- We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy
- We will notify you via push notification or email for material changes
- The updated policy will be posted on our website and in the app
Your continued use of Lainie after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
